When is it Time to Redesign Your Website?
DIY Sprocket Solutions
There comes a time in every person’s life when they’ve got to ask themselves – is it time to redesign my website? That may not actually be true. The truth is, however, that if you DO have a website and if you ARE invested in it –it is worth a second look every now and then to see if there is actually need to shake things up a bit. This could be anything from swapping out colors, to changing your whole theme. Maybe your little spokesperson is a brunette, but you heard blondes have more fun. Whatever your reasoning, if you are asking yourself if it’s time to redesign, here are a few pieces to look at that may need a little tweaking, moving, and shaking.
- Are you mobile friendly? Most people nowadays aren’t just designing their sites with a computer in mind. They are thinking mobile, tablets, etc. What is your site layout going to look like pulled up on somebody’s phone? Not sure? Go check. It might be time for a re-do. More on that: here.
- How’s that color scheme working for you? Maybe it’s great or maybe you’ve been looking at the same lime green for 12 years and you want to poke your eyes out. That’s a call only you can make. You don’t want to look dated. Make sure that the color scheme that you picked out in 1987 works today. If it does, awesome. If it doesn’t, go change out of those parachute pants and get to work.
- Do you have a theme? Maybe you do, maybe you don’t. Now is the time to see if the theme of your website is working for you. Is it getting the message across that you want it to? Or, on the flip side of that coin, if you don’t have a theme –do you think you need one to add a little direction/cohesiveness to your website/brand?
- How is updating going for you? Maybe you need new modules. Maybe you need to use another system to manage your website. There are easier methods coming out every day –look into them. Cough. DNN. Cough.
- Is your functionality up to date? Your page links to your Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn, Pinterest, etc. page right? RIGHT?! I’ll wait while you go fix that right up.
- What’s up with your bandwidth? If your page takes longer than a few seconds to load, you should seriously consider optimizing your site. If I have to wait five seconds –you’ve lost me.
- Are they making it past your home page? If not, you may need to re evaluate what you’ve got on your homepage. Maybe the design is wrong, maybe the information is wrong, maybe it looks dated, maybe you should spread some info out to different tabs. Maybe you should take a look and check back here after.
- Do search engines know you exist? Keep fresh content on your site (blog, updated articles, etc.) Use keywords that you know your customers are searching for. Easy as pie.
- How is your copyright looking? It should be looking like this – “Copyright [whatever the current year is]” No exceptions. Seriously.
- When was the last time you revamped your site? Can’t remember? You should probably get on that right now then…
Only you can know if your site needs redesigning. Again, that’s actually not true. If your site needs updating, several people probably know but just haven’t let you know. Or maybe they have let you know but you think they’re wrong. Chances are that they’re not wrong. Be a friend and share this article with any friend you have that has or may know someone with a website that needs a facelift. Tweet this, share this, -whatever you need to do. Friends don’t let friends keep outdated websites.
