Insights for Boosting Both Productivity and Success This Year
Especially for small biz folk!
It’s common for a small business owner to do three different jobs, but you are still only one person. Here are some tips for improving your productivity:
Hire assistance
Yes, you are awesome, but since you are more awesome at some things than others, delegate the less-important tasks. We live in a technological age so you have a lot of options here. You can hire a physical or virtual assistant or take advantage of available technology. There are hundreds of great (and often free!) business apps for taking your productivity to the next level.
Minimize distractions
Working from home? Turn off the TV and stop answering the door. Irrelevant emails clogging up your inbox and grabbing your attention? Set up specific times to respond to emails and separate your personal and your work emails so you don’t get sidetracked. Identify the distractions in your work environment and set up a plan to actively minimize them.
Cut the dead weight
Don’t allow yourself to get sucked in by employees and coworkers who aren’t as focused as you. Yes, that might mean some tough decisions will need to be made, but the poor habits and attitude of just one person can poison the whole workplace.
Prioritize your day
It’s amazing how little things add up. Returning a phone call, checking your email, updating a report –all of these things take time. Make a list and set your priorities for the day, the week, the month. That way, you are actually staying on schedule instead of having the hours sucked out of your day by miscellaneous tasks.
Practice self-care
Yes, “self-care” is a popular buzzword, but you won’t stay productive if you’re burning yourself out. Try not to over-schedule your workday and be sure to schedule in some regular time for yourself.
Running your own business is a challenge, no doubt! And you will certainly have days when you have no choice but to work longer hours. But while the occasional push to launch something new or fight a fire can be exhilarating, always having to push yourself just becomes an emotionally draining slog.
