Why We Build Websites with DNN
The Sprocket Report
This article has been updated on 5/23/2023 with the article entitled “Why We Still Build Websites in DNN, Alongside WordPress.”
Most business owners and organization managers just want a nice-looking, hard-working website and they don’t really care how that happens. We use DNN to build our sites and here’s why it’s the perfect choice for our clients:
We've been in the website business since days of dial up modems and we've written our share of HTML and CSS code. That was when you needed a webmaster on staff so you could beg for a typo correction. Later, programs like Dreamweaver and FrontPage relieved some of the burden of code-writing, but you still needed to be pretty technical to build and maintain a good website.
Now everybody thinks creating a website is a piece of cake. For the price of a fast food lunch, do-it-yourself online site builders will have you up and running this evening. It's true - we even sell that service ourselves - but while the technology has grown, so have expectations for what a website should do and that's where the disconnect happens.
Websites have evolved far beyond just an online brochure. Now they process registrations, charge credit cards, post and delete scheduled announcements, allow users to socialize, give non-techies online authority and many other abilities.
Creative coders write the plug-ins and modules that beef up what popular website builders can do. The plus side of that Open Source creativity is that a company can add functions to their site as income grows rather than plunking down a ton of cash all at once. The minus side of Open Source creativity is that there’s little accountability when a bug shows up or the plug-ins don’t work together properly.
Out of all the great work being done by Open Source coders, we chose DNN as our tool. DNN has an enthusiastic world-wide creative community that is continually developing new website functionality, but it’s not a typical Open Source product. DNN is based on Microsoft's .NET technology, which is favored by the IT departments of big corporations, and it has a corporation of its own, DNNSoftware, to provide accountability.
What this allows us to build is truly impressive, both in functionality and in ROI. The Content Management System lets clients update their own text and graphics, the responsive pages are mobile-friendly and the modular framework means clients can update with a new look without rebuilding all the old content.
Spurred on by the corporate team, new and better versions of DNN are being released on a regular basis to keep up with trends and requirements. In the past, we’ve used tools that stopped advancing and were no longer supported, so we really appreciate the cutting-edge mentality and are proud to offer it to our clients.
As we said, most folks just want a nice working website, which we provide. But we wanted you to know that we had our clients’ best interests in mind when we chose DNN as the platform on which we build. If you'd like to know more about why DNN should be your choice, give us a call. We're happy to help you understand your options.
