Whether Woodwork or Web Work: Pick the Perfect Professional for Your Project

When you need to build something for your home, how do you choose the right craftsperson? When working with a professional, you’ll get better results if you learn a little about how the job will be done – and that includes website building.

Let’s say you want a place to store your books. A good way to store them is on a shelf so you decide to hire a carpenter to build one. How difficult can a shelf be? Isn’t it just a couple of boards with a few nails driven into them?

The guy next door says he could drive nails for you, inexpensively because he doesn’t yet have a lot of experience with a hammer. He winds up bending the nails when he hits them and denting the wood when he misses. You get your shelf, but it’s not great and it doesn’t show off your books to their best advantage.

The neighbor on the other side is known as quite the woodworker, but all she had in her garage was a sledgehammer. Using all of her talent and experience, she still builds you a nice shelf, but since the sledgehammer was her tool, it took a lot more time which became really expensive.

The craftsperson you should have hired is someone who has the right hammer for your shelf project and knows how to use that hammer to drive nails with efficiency and style. When trying to find such a woodworker, it helps to learn just a little bit about building shelves so you can discuss the process intelligently with your craftsperson and share the same expectations for the completed project.

Here are some questions you might ask:

  • What do you want to put on your shelf? Only paperbacks or hefty coffee table books?
  • How do you want the nails to hold the boards together? Are they decorative or do you want them hidden?
  • What kind of hammer will be used? Is it big enough to drive nails well? Or too big for the simple staples you had in mind?
  • Who will be wielding the hammer? Does your craftsperson have enough experience to quote the job accurately, complete it on time, and provide the shelf you need for your books?

No one expects you to be a woodworking expert because, let’s face it, only another experienced craftsperson gets excited about discussing the different methods of making shelves. But knowing just a little lets you have a productive conversation when choosing a woodworker for your shelf project.

Obviously, I’m not really talking about building shelves here but about building websites. You can find many kinds of website-building tools and experts of varying levels who use those tools. The Sprocket Websites team has decades of experience in building websites using a wide variety of tools, and we will help you choose the web-building tool that best suits your needs.
