Honestly, Your Website Needs Updating
The Sprocket Report
Jim Kendall, business columnist for The Daily Herald, related a too-common story in his post yesterday. He went to the website listed on a business card he received and found an out-of-date copyright, stale blog “news” and a phone number that didn’t work. “Is this business alive?” Kendall wondered. What does the look of your website say about your organization?
As far as we’re concerned, Kendall is preaching to the choir. But his article is an important reminder for business owners and managers – and from a reliable source that may actually be heard. We give the same message, but how often do people just roll their eyes and think: “Oh, you’re just saying my site needs work because you’re web developers and you want to sell me something.”
Well, we do want you to buy – buy into the concept that your website = your organization.
If you have a storefront or an office, you no doubt make sure to project a good impression as soon as customers walk in the door. The floor is clean, the décor is fresh and accreditations are prominently displayed. People want to feel assured that you will take care of them well and they figure that if you can’t be bothered about your own business, you won’t put much effort into theirs.
Your website, as your 24/7 virtual representative, should project the same attractive and professional qualities. If you’re thinking we want you to spend a fortune on a new website, you’d be wrong. Some folks with awful websites already spent a fortune – in 1999 – and haven’t updated them since. In spite of the investment, they now look out of touch and unreliable, hardly the impression they want to leave.
Website Content Management Systems were developed to let people easily update their sites on their own, developing search-friendly content by adding news, photos and other information whenever they want. We build sites with a Content Management System so folks can do just that.
But even with the do-it-yourself tool, some businesses just can’t find the time and clients have asked for packages of hours and services. Now we also offer maintenance support so clients can manage their budget along with their content.
Whether you have a powerful new website or an older, more modest one, we agree with Kendall: “Your site needs to be interesting to regular visitors, too; simple new content often does the job.” If you need help building new content, contact us today for either a monthly updating package or a one-time consultation. We’re always happy to help. And be sure to read the rest of Jim Kendall’s article at The Daily Herald.
