Choose Wisely - How Web Designers Differ
The Sprocket Report
Nearly everyone and their nephew can make you a website these days, but will it accomplish your goals? Only Mary Poppins is practically perfect in every way, so prepare for your web designer’s strengths and weaknesses.
Needing a website for your business or organization is not an option anymore. When you need to update your old site or launch a new one, remember that all websites are not the same. Who builds it can make a huge impact on the end product. Keep your goals in mind when working with your next web designer so you can make the most of their strengths and avoid their weak spots.
When you work with a Graphic Designer
Graphic designers have the flair and the training to create something beautiful and eye-catching that will impress the heck out of you and your customers. But while gorgeous images and layout make great print pieces, they don’t necessarily translate well into digital. Graphic artists may not have the background to take advantage of the technology available to provide such things as proper responsive web design, animated interaction or searchable text.
When you work with a Web Developer
Many web developers know programming code inside and out and can manipulate it in the most intricate ways to produce amazing results. But they frequently have no eye for design at all and create dull-looking or even ugly websites. Technical bells and whistles can only impress if web visitors are visually attracted and enticed to linger by great images, sophisticated style and judicious use of white space.
When you work with a Marketing Agency
A marketing agency asks up front what your goal is and then works a plan with techniques they have used successfully before in order to meet the goal. Identifying and coordinating the different techniques is their greatest strength, but they may not have a web person in-house or on-call who knows your platform. Implementing an agency’s marketing plan can be problematic or expensive if you don’t have the right technical support.
Your Best Choice
The only “practically perfect” choice for your best website is a team approach that includes marketing, technology AND design. At Sprocket, we started with a little design and a lot of technology and through the years added a ton of marketing while continuing to enhance our other skills. Even so, we love to partner with a clever marketing agency or an inspirational graphic artist because we can appreciate and enhance their work using our technical strengths.
If you already have part of your team assembled and need mad web skills to really make your project soar, give us a call. We’re happy to help and be partners in your success!
