How to Hammer Down Your Website

When it’s time to build something around the house, how do choose the right carpenter? What about when it’s time to build your website? When you’re working with a professional, you’ll get better results if you take time to learn a bit about how the job will be done.

Let’s say you want a place to store your books. A good way to store them is on a shelf so you decide to hire a carpenter to build one. How difficult can a shelf be? Isn’t it just a couple of boards with a few nails driven into them?

The guy next door says he can drive nails, but if he’s inexperienced with a hammer, he may wind up bending nails or denting the wood when he misses. You’ll get your shelf, but it’s not going to show off your books to their best advantage.

The neighbor on the other side may be quite the carpenter, but all she has in her garage right now is a sledge hammer. With her experience, she could probably still build you a nice shelf, but since it’s going to be tricky to drive nails with a sledge hammer, it may take a while. 

The carpenter you should be hiring is the one who has the right hammer for your shelf project and knows to use that hammer to drive nails with efficiency and style. To find such a carpenter, it helps if you learn just a little bit about building shelves so you both have the same expectations for the completed project.

• Start by explaining the goal for your shelf. Is it for paperbacks or hefty coffee table books?
• Think about how you want the nails to hold the boards together. Are they decorative or will they be hidden?
• Ask what kind of hammer will be used. Is it big enough to drive the nails well? Or too big for the tacks you have in mind?
• Find out who will be wielding the hammer. Is it a carpenter who has enough experience to quote the job accurately, complete it on time and explain it to you when you ask?

No one expects you to be super savvy because let’s face it, only other experienced carpenters can really get excited about discussing the different types of hammers. But knowing just a little can help you have a productive conversation when you’re choosing the carpenter for your shelf project.
