Who Ya Gonna Call when Email Goes Wrong?
The Sprocket Report
Email is one of those things that works great – until it doesn’t. With the average business owner or not-for-profit director intent on their own job, who should they ask to fix their email issues?
The simple and annoying answer is “it depends.”
Who set up your email in the first place? If you have an IT department or an IT person who set it up for you, that would be where to start. They’ll be familiar with the moving parts and what the appropriate steps would be.
Often, however, your email may have been set up by your web developer when they built your website. If so, give them a call and ask them to take a look.
Or maybe you went to a company like GoDaddy to buy email service on your own. Go ahead and make use of their customer support for help and advice.
A server issue or a network problem might be what’s causing you grief somewhere along the line. You’d be surprised to learn all the steps of an email’s journey! But the trip begins and ends on your computer, tablet or mobile phone and the program you use there. Some common email programs are Outlook, Mac Mail, Thunderbird and similar. Keep in mind that GoDaddy, your web developer and possibly even your IT person don’t know what program you are using to fetch and send email on your personal devices.
Outlook, Mac Mail and similar programs have plenty of online FAQs, tutorials and other support to help you solve your problems. If you aren’t comfortable with technology in general or are unfamiliar with your specific email program, it might be wise to ask someone who knows their way around to get in front of the screen with you. Together, you can walk through the steps to be sure everything is configured correctly.
When email communication comes to a screeching halt, getting it fixed becomes a top priority. The question isn’t WHETHER your email will go down – it’s WHEN. Make a note now who you’re gonna call before it happens to you. If setting up email service is not your forte, give us a call. We’d be glad to help.
