What Is the Mission of Your Business?
The Sprocket Report
We saw a truck today with a company slogan written on it that really impressed us: “Helping the world keep promises.” A slogan is basically a mini mission statement. Does your business have one?
Hammering out a mission statement is one of those things business owners do when they are getting started. Few can still quote it after a couple of years, but shouldn’t we all be repeating our mission statement like a mantra every day?
The truck we saw belongs to Old Dominion, a freight shipping company. They’re a family-run business and have been since starting out in 1934 with one truck. Now they operate internationally. Don’t you love how much OD has packed into those five words? This is what we hear:
- Clients and prospective clients include everyone in the whole world
- They help clients look good to THEIR clients
- This is a serious, vow-worthy matter
- Whether you hire them to pack, ship or deliver, it will happen
- And it will be done on time and safely
- So everyone is delighted
Their full mission statement uses more words but makes a less powerful declaration:
To provide innovative solutions designed to exceed customer expectations, increase shareholder value, and ensure the continued successes of the OD Company and our family of employees.
That got us to thinking about coming up with a slogan of our own, something we can internalize and express simply to others. Originally, the Sprocket mission statement was a hefty paragraph which we eventually whittled down to a single sentence:
To build mutually beneficial partnerships by providing valuable web technologies, services, products, education and support.
This statement is still accurate more than six years later. We still provide web services and products. We still educate and support our clients. Most importantly, we are still firm believers in partnership.
You have the bright idea, the awesome product or the great service. We know how to put the web to work for you. As your company grows, we can do even more to support your business mission. Working together, we both succeed. Which is our business mission.
So if we had a truck, maybe the slogan on it would be “Your Web Partner.”
What about you? What’s the mission statement or slogan for your organization? And how can we help you fulfill it? Contact us today to explore how we can begin a mutually beneficial partnership.
