Marketers: Facebook Search Overhauled

DIY Sprocket Solutions

This article has been updated on 10/24/2023 with the article entitled Facebook Updated Its Algorithm Again, so Make the Most of It.”

This week, Facebook announced Search FYI. Facebook search was updated with new features and better suggestions. After checking them out, I’ve got to say that it is a big improvement over the previous capabilities. Changes include better personalized search suggestions and the addition of public posts and conversations.  These changes could mean some very interesting things for content marketers.

The better personalized search suggestions are a great jumping off point. You can find any conversation or post you’ve seen before on Facebook. For instance start typing in a friend’s name and a keyword that coincides with the post you’re trying to find:

Facebook now offers timely, personalized search suggestions when you click on the search box and start typing.

The other big addition is the ability to find public conversations and posts through Facebook search. Facebook encourages users to “explore the world beyond [their] news feed [by searching and seeing] what the world is saying right now about the topics that matter […], with results that are up-to-the-minute and personalized.” Now when you search, you’ll see the most recent, relevant public posts come up in addition to posts from your friends. The idea is to offer search results that are organized in a way to help you to quickly understand what the world is saying about a topic in the moment. You can continue to pull-to-refresh to update the content shown and see the latest public posts.

So, what is this going to mean for content marketers? Potentially big things.

Marketers with compelling content being shared on Facebook just got a whole lot more interesting and received a brand new audience. Think about it, with these new public search capabilities, Facebook users now have a new way to discover the content you’ve put out there. As long as your businesses’ posts are set to public, anyone searching for relevant content (like on any other platform) is going to find you. Even those who are not following you or have no existing relationship with your company’s Facebook page. Think of the possibilities for new referrals to your content, traffic to your website, and building your audience on Facebook. All for posting relevant content with an appropriately worded post. Potential game changer for marketing and sharing content on Facebook.

What are your thoughts on how this will impact content marketers on Facebook? Do you think there will be a catch for Facebook’s business pages? Comment below!
