Lazy Social Media Habits We All Should Break

Yes, you have a lot on your plate, but is just going through the motions of your social media tasks helping your business – or hurting it?

We fall into a routine, we get comfortable, we do things because they’re easy. Then before you know it, we’re victims of our own bad habits. It’s human nature. When it comes to social media marketing though, this is a trap. If you’re marketing your business on social media (which you should be), it’s time to shake things up and get out of that rut. Below are some of common faults we all have been guilty of – at least on occasion.

Auto-scheduling across multiple platforms

If you have any education in social media, you know that platforms are different. They work differently and have different kinds of audiences. But with amazing social media management tools like Hootsuite, Buffer, and so on, it is easy to auto-schedule a single post across all of your networks. We have been guilty of the same!

However, there are ways to optimize your posts to perform better on different platforms. Longer posts may do better than shorter posts. Or vice versa. Hashtags that work well on one platform don’t do well on another. Optimizing your posts for each platform means better engagement. We already know this, but we all need the reminder from time to time.

Using the same photo everywhere

Each social media platform has different photo qualifications and sizes to use for optimum use and visibility. There are different specifications for profile photo, header photo, background photo, thumbnail photo, etc., depending on the platform on which you are posting. You’re only doing your business a disservice if you use photos that don’t make the best use of the space or if you’re not using photos in all the available spaces. Social media marketing is very visual. People make instant judgments based on what they see at a glance. A really great photo gives them that instant, positive impression.

Talking AT your followers

Social media is about being SOCIAL. We all know it, and yet many posts sound more like pushy sales talk instead of conversation. It is not social to blurt out advertisements like billboards on a highway. That’s talking AT people instead of talking TO them. Social media offers a unique way for customers to interact and form a relationship with your business. Talking TO your customers allows positive interactions and relationships to grow.

There have been times when we have also been guilty of these lazy habits. But it’s never too late to shape up a marketing strategy. We can all start today! Don’t forget that the Sprocket team is always on hand to take on some of your website and marketing tasks to free you up for more important duties.
