Kondo-ing Your Digital Assets

The Sprocket Report

Everyone is busy "tidying up" their homes these days, but your business could also experience some of that life-changing magic by getting your online home in order.

Marie Kondo promises that organizing your stuff will bring serenity to your life and that is especially true of the digital stuff of your business. So take the time to virtually pile it all in the middle of the room for sorting and look at these three categories for decluttering:

Since the word is in our name, of course we’ll start with websites!

Tidying Up Your Website

  • Start with your online calendar or event list and clean out any outdated information that makes your site look stale. You don’t want people to wonder if you’ve closed up shop.

  • Review your blog posts to see if they still fit. Links break and theories change. Update your posts to provide more accurate information for your readers and help your SEO at the same time.

  • Walk through all the web pages and your Google Analytics. Some pages may be redundant or no longer of interest. The analytics can tell you how much traffic they get.

Tidying Up Your Email

  • Review all the email addresses assigned to your domain. You may have some that you forgot you created and are no longer monitoring.

  • Make better use of your business email addresses such as "support@" and "sales@." Decide when to use them and who they will be forwarded to for monitoring. You might even choose to create new ones for new uses.

  • Purge the email addresses of folks who have left your employ. Obviously, they no longer should be representing your business, but forgotten email addresses can be also manipulated by spammers, causing your domain to be blacklisted. When that happens, all of your business email is shut down.

Tidying Up Your Social Media

  • Check on which platforms your business has an account. There might be accounts you didn’t even know were created. Facebook, Google My Business and Yelp are some platforms that let folks create accounts for businesses they patronize and want to talk about.

  • Gather up login information for each and put it all in one place where you can find it. When accounts are created by different people at different times, this info can get scattered.

  • Review each account’s permissions to be sure that the people who have access are the ones you trust to represent your business. Remove folks who no longer need access to your account.

When we’re so busy with day-to-day business, we tend to overlook the clutter in our digital assets to work on more important tasks. But it’s tough to achieve the KonMari goal of serenity and inspiration when you realize your old phone number is still on your website and your social media admin left for Nepal without passing along the passwords.

If you’re committed to getting organized and need help tweaking your website or social media so it will "spark joy," just give us a call. We would be happy to help!

Sprocket Report

Every other Tuesday, Sprocket sends out the Sprocket Report, our latest business tip or our reaction to what's currently happening in Internet Marketing.

You'll read a web marketing tip from Kate, another one from Breanne, and - bonus! - we always have a guest post as well.

That's three valuable posts that you can read, plus a quick look at upcoming events and what's being said on Twitter. A great synopsis!

You'll want to get this newsletter for yourself, in your own inbox, so here's how. It's easy!

Scroll back up and put your email in the box. OR scroll to the bottom of each page. We have our newsletter subscription box there, too!

We NEVER give out your email address to anybody else, and we don't flood you with ads. It's just good, free information.
