Balancing Business, Personal, and Social Media During the Holidays

DIY Sprocket Solutions

The holidays are approaching and social media doesn’t just stop because the date is November 27th or December 25th. Halloween is right around the corner and before we know it we’ll be in full holiday swing. This means several things for brands and companies. The holiday season can be an unbelievably useful marketing time. It’s also an incredibly busy time as well. How do you balance promoting your business and getting through the holidays in your personal life? Priorities –and there are a few that should top your list.

  • Schedule posts. Don’t be afraid of this. I’m not saying schedule two months ahead of time and then check out to stuff yourself full of turkey and cookies, but if you know you’re going to have an incredibly busy day or two then schedule posts ahead of time. Don’t drop off the grid. Schedule a “Happy Holidays” graphic to go out. You can still keep in touch with your readers from a distance while you take the time to spend time with those who matter most.
  • Have some promotions! Why would you want to be the only business this time of year without a promotion/sale/giveaway/offer etc.?! If you’re not having a sale, someone else is. You can say bye-bye to that customer’s business.
  • Keep your customers informed. If you have modified business hours, are closed, or will be unavailable for contact on Thanksgiving Day and New Years Eve, then tell people that. Take to social media to keep your customers informed about any changes so that they are aware. You don’t have to make a huge deal about it, but a simple turkey graphic with a line like, “We’ll be closed Thanksgiving Day, too stuffed with stuffing to open up shop! Enjoy the day with your loved ones!” will go a long way.
  • Prepare for problems. Nothing ever goes off without a hitch –especially when it has to do with the holidays. Prepare yourself ahead of time for how you will respond if there’s a problem with your promotion, you have someone trying to contact you on social media or otherwise on Christmas Day, your scheduled posts are no longer okay send out the day they’re set up for, etc. What is your backup?
  • Plan ahead. Start planning, right now, today! It’s the end of October. Take a few hours this week, sit down with a calendar, and plan out a few promotions you’d like to run. Figure out what days you’ll be unavailable and that you’ll need to schedule posts for. MAKE A LIST AND CHECK IT TWICE. This is a busy time of year for everyone. You don’t have to slack on family or your business. You just have to prepare yourself for the next few months ahead.

Yes, this is a busy time of year. It doesn’t have to be so overwhelming that your head explodes though. Take a breath, sit back, and consider what you want to accomplish over the next few months. Get your priorities in order (whatever they are!) and plan it out so the rest can fall in line.

Every other Tuesday, Sprocket sends out the Sprocket Report, our latest business tip or our reaction to what's currently happening in Internet Marketing.

You'll read a web marketing tip from Kate, another one from Breanne, and - bonus! - we always have a guest post as well.

That's three valuable posts that you can read, plus a quick look at upcoming events and what's being said on Twitter. A great synopsis!

You'll want to get this newsletter for yourself, in your own inbox, so here's how. It's easy!

Scroll back up and put your email in the box. OR scroll to the bottom of each page. We have our newsletter subscription box there, too!

We NEVER give out your email address to anybody else, and we don't flood you with ads. It's just good, free information.
