4 Things You MUST Keep Updated on Your Site

DIY Sprocket Solutions

Pretty, pretty please.

My extensive experience and qualifications [insert lol] have taught me that there are a few things that are, without a doubt, website killers. I’ve ranted randomly here and there about updating your content.  Today, I’m not just slipping it slyly in.  I’m getting out my rusty trusty step stool (I’m only 5’1) to get on eye level with you and I’m making sure that you really understand what I’m saying.  If you do nothing else, keep these 4 things updated on your site.  Not one or two of them; all 4 if it’s all the same to you.

  1. Copyright.  It is 2013.  I know that the lack of flying cars is disappointing, but that doesn’t mean that everything else in our lives has to be in shambles.  Please, update your copyright.  When you don’t update it, do you know what the first thing customers do is when they come to your site?  They leave.  Your content looks unreliable today when your copyright reads 2005.  Irrelevant and undependable.
  2. Blog or NewsFeed.  Having a blog or newsfeed is a great idea, really –no sarcasm here.  But you have to UPDATE it.  When you don’t update it, the rest of the world feels like we’re reading an old myspace page.  The information is still there, the date is stuck at 2002, and this ghost town looks a little creepy.  That ribbon cutting five years ago looked like a ton of fun, but you haven’t posted a thing since then and we’re wondering if those people are even still alive.  If you can’t keep up with the blog or newsfeed, you’ve got a few options. 1) Delete it. 2) Hire someone to write content for you or (at the very least) 3) Remove the dates so we don’t know that you haven’t written in 2 years.
  3. Coupons or Promotions.  If I head over to a site where the coupons expired years ago or the promotions included a VCR giveaway, I’m turning the other direction.  Honestly, if I saw that I would think that your business no longer existed.  I’d assume that you just forgot to close up shop online.
  4. Contact Information.  Is it necessary for me to even elaborate on what a disservice you are providing yourself by having contact info that leads to no one?  Ring, ring, ring, ring… Excuse me while I Google a different company.

I know, short list right?  These are bare minimums folks.  I’m just trying to help you keep customers from running away terrified from your site as fast as their mouse can click.  There’s no excuse here, these are goals you can keep up with once a month if that’s the best you can do.  You are only hurting yourself by not dusting out the cobwebs.  The only ones getting trapped in them are prospective customers.

Very well said, I have turned the other way at one time or another for each of the four reasons you''ve stated.

That's three valuable posts that you can read, plus a quick look at upcoming events and what's being said on Twitter. A great synopsis!

You'll want to get this newsletter for yourself, in your own inbox, so here's how. It's easy!

Scroll back up and put your email in the box. OR scroll to the bottom of each page. We have our newsletter subscription box there, too!

We NEVER give out your email address to anybody else, and we don't flood you with ads. It's just good, free information.
