Update these 4 Items on your Website before You Forget
I may be only five-foot-one, but I’m getting up on my step stool to look you in the eye and be sure that you really understand what I’m saying: These website killers need to be taken care of if you don’t want customers from running away terrified from your site as fast as their mouse can click. Here’s what I (and your customers!) want to see:
Number 1: Current Copyright Date
Please! Update your copyright. When you don’t update it, do you know the first thing customers do is when they come to your site? They leave. Old content looks unreliable, irrelevant and undependable. Many of the newer web platforms update the copyright automatically so you don’t have to worry, but you’d better check. If your website still sports an old date, that’s a big hint that you might need to modernize more than just the copyright.
Number 2: Recent News or Blog Post
A blog or newsfeed is great for both SEO algorithms and humans, but you have to keep it current. When you don’t update it, the rest of the world feels like it’s reading an old MySpace page and the ghost town looks a little creepy. While that ribbon cutting article from five years ago looks like it was a ton of fun, you haven’t posted a thing since then and everyone’s wondering if you’re even still in business.
If you can’t keep up with the blog or newsfeed, you’ve got a few options.
- Delete it.
- Hire someone to write new content for you.
- Remove the dates on your posts so folks don’t know it’s two-year-old.
Number 3: Unexpired Coupons and Promotions
If I head over to your website and the coupons expired years ago or the promotions included a VCR giveaway, I’m turning the other direction. Honestly, if I saw that I would think that your business no longer existed, but you just forgot to close up shop online.
Number 4: Accurate Contact Information
Is it even necessary for me to elaborate on what a disservice you are providing yourself by having contact info that leads to no one? I can’t get hold of you through your phone number, email address or social media page, then excuse me while I google a different company.
This a short and obvious list right, folks. There’s no excuse. These are goals you can keep up with at least once a month, if that’s the best you can do. You are only hurting yourself by not dusting out the cobwebs, so let’s clean up those websites! If you need a hand with it, just give us a call!
This is an update to “4 Things You MUST Keep Updated on Your Site” dated 2/13/2013.
