Our Report on this Year's DNN Summit

The Sprocket Report

We’re back from DNN Summit 2020, and while it was great to ditch Illinois’ winter for a few days of Florida sunshine, more importantly, we learned all the latest news and tips to help our current clients get the best from their DNN websites. Here’s a brief recount of the highlights:

Beth Massi, the Product Marketing Manager for the .NET platform and a member of the Board of Directors for the .NET Foundation was the keynote speaker to open the Summit. She spoke about the solid future of .NET technology, which is good for DNN as well since DNN is built on the .NET framework. .NET’s continued growth and support means developers won’t have the rug pulled out from under them while continuing their work with DNN.

The three day conference started with a Training Day followed by two more days of informative sessions. Much of the training was specific to developers and designers, the people who continue to improve the DNN platform, and we talked with a number of developers about what they are working on to make DNN a better platform.

In addition to development sessions, there was also an Administrator Training track for folks whose job it is to manage a DNN website for their employer. While used by a variety of industries, DNN is a particular favorite with many government organizations and we met several administrators during the conference.

A number of the administrators in attendance were there to explore the differences between DNN Platform, the Open Source project, and DNN Evoq, the commercial version. They had quite a few questions on how to go back to the Platform from Evoq and what effect a "side-grade" would have on their website. Learning about the latest tools and security features were hot topics.

We also got to hang out with other integrators like ourselves, those who help clients by building DNN websites. It’s always a rewarding experience to swap stories and get advice from your peers in the trenches, not to mention how great it is to finally meet people face-to-face that before we only knew as online icons and disembodied voices.

DNN Summit 2020 gave us ample opportunity to spend quality time with fellow DNN folk, especially those committed to advancing the DNN project. There has been some concern in the past about DNN’s future since the corporation around DNN was sold, but the old guard has rallied and new supporters are joining the cause. Some really innovative developments are in the works that you will be hearing about, both new features and updated core functions.

Of particular interest to all those who use DNN is the latest security technology now available. Because of the .Net platform, DNN is less often hacked than some other platforms, but the danger still exists. Sprocket is committed to working with all of our clients to keep their websites protected by upgrading to the most secure version, so you’ll be hearing from us soon.

All in all, DNN Summit 2020 was a terrific event and we are proud to have been part of the planning committee. The future of DNN looks bright. The platform is stronger, better and more secure than ever. If you currently have a DNN website, you’re in good hands and we’d be happy to help you get even better. If you don’t currently have a DNN website, give us a call because this could be the solution you’re looking for.
