Things to Keep in Mind: Using Hashtags on Facebook

This article has been updated on 1/17/2023 with the article entitled "What to Keep in Mind When Adding Hashtags to your Facebook Posts.”

Still giving Facebook hashtags a go?  Great! Assuming you're using them correctly... If you're using hashtags on Facebook, you have to remember that it's not the same platform as Twitter.  There are different rules that apply.  The same basic structure is set up though.  You type in a "#" symbol and then whatever single word or phrase without spaces that you want to use (sans symbols).  What else do you need to remember though?

Well, for starters, people can only see hashtags that were shared with them.  Meaning, if you post a status with a hashtag, and you want everyone to be able to find that post via hashtag, then you need to make sure that your post is public.  Otherwise, whatever settings are applied to that specific post are the same people who will be able to view your post when they search that hashtag.

Twitter is different in that profiles are defaulted to public, unless you want them to be private.  So, a mass majority of tweets are viewable by all and a mass majority of hashtags are searchable by all.  On Facebook, this is not the case.  You can change privacy settings for each individual post, so you have to keep that in mind when setting those parameters.  This also pertains to people's personal Facebook pages as well.  If your intention isn't to make your post searchable to all of Facebook, then be sure that your posts with hashtags have stricter privacy settings on them.

Remember too that you can search for a hashtag using the search bar at the top of any page.  This can be used both to search hashtags and following trending tags and also to research hashtags before you use them.  If you are a business and you are posting for marketing, you should probably double check the hashtags that you plan on using ahead of time to vet them.  This way, you don't have your posts showing up on searches that you might otherwise not wish to be associated with.

Wherever you are using hashtags, be sure to check the guidelines for posting and searching with each social media platform.  This can clear up any confusion and it can also ensure that your posts are being seen and tracked by the audience that you want it to bee put in front of.

What has your experience been with using hashtags on Facebook?  Comment below!
