Email Marketing in 2015

DIY Sprocket Solutions

This article has been updated on 5/10/2022 with the article entitled “Current Trends for Your Best Email Marketing Successes.”

No, email marketing is not dead.  In fact, email marketing is kind of huge right now.  I can tell you that with Black Friday/Cyber Monday/Crazy Holiday Deal Madness behind me -I did most of my online shopping based on email marketing campaigns sent from a few stores I frequent online.  I can also tell you that I am a repeat shopper at most of those places online not only because I love their products, but also because they continually send me emails that hit the nail right on the head.  What are they doing right?  I'm glad you asked...

There are 4 email marketing trends that are big right now [and they are big for a reason]: THEY'RE WORKING.

  1. They are image based.  I don't want to read through a wall of text.  I want to open my Old Navy email, see some cute new clothes I obviously need to have for my kids, and click.  Don't tell me about it. Show it to me. #aintnobodygottimeforthat
  2. They bring the sale to your doorstep.  There are some awesome sites and apps out now to find great deals online.  It takes minimal effort to find them, but it still takes some sort of effort.  An extra few swipes of the thumb, if you will.  Meanwhile, I've got a bright and shiny email in my inbox with a subject reading: "40% off your favorite handbags through midnight tonight only!"  Obviously I need to see what that's all about.  It's 40% off.  It's only for today.  My favorite handbags are involved.  Also, I bet if I click on the email I'll see some nice pictures of those bags - not just a wall of text... Just sayin'.
  3. They get the timing just right.  How does Pizza Hut always know to send me those promos at 6pm on a weeknight with two screaming kids, no food in the house, and a list of things I'm supposed to be getting done?  Food is pretty easy.  Send emails when people are hungry.  Other companies may be unclear on their perfect time to send out an email.  Simply send out emails to group A at one time and group B at another time.  Who opened more emails?  Boom.  Mission accomplished.
  4. Mobile, mobile, mobile, mobile.  Who opens their computers anymore?  Well, I'm on one right now... but besides me.  It's obscene how many people are shopping, ordering, checking email right from their phones.  If your emails aren't mobile user friendly, then your emails are sort of pointless.

Like I said, email marketing is not dead!  It's just getting bigger, better, brighter, and flashier than ever before.  Send at the right times, push those promo codes, throw in the great pictures that will make people swoon, and be mobile friendly.  Any other tips for email marketing in 2015?  Any businesses that get you every time?  It's Old Navy for me... every. single. time.  They've got my number for sure.
