5 Tips to Increase Productivity

DIY Sprocket Solutions

This article has been updated on 1/18/2022 with the article entitled “Insights for Boosting Both Productivity and Success in the New Year.”

There are several “keys” to a successful business –it’s hard to pinpoint what’s most important. One thing is for sure though; if you’re not being productive, then you’re not going to get very far. When it comes to productivity –there is always room for improvement.

So, what are some tips to help boost your productivity in business?

  1. Get Some Great AssistanceWe live in a technological age so you have a lot of options here. You can literally go out, and get an assistant, or you can take advantage of the technology surrounding you. There are hundreds of great (and free!) business apps that can help take your productivity to the next level. In fact, we just did an article a few weeks ago about some great apps to increase your productivity. You can check them out here.
  2. Minimize DistractionsYou have to be in charge of your own results here. Recognize what distractions you have in your work environment and set up a plan to actively minimize them. Working from home? Turn off the TV and stop answering the door. Irrelevant emails clogging up your inbox and grabbing your attention? Set up specific times to respond to emails and separate your personal and your work emails so you don’t get sidetracked.
  3. Cut Dead Weight: If you want your business to be successful, then you need to surrounds yourself with people that are just as focused on staying productive as you are. Don’t allow yourself to get sucked in by co workers who are killing time talking around the water cooler. If you’re an employer, recognize that you might need to make some tough decisions when it comes to letting people go. If you have one person in the group who isn't focused and isn't productive, that can easily rub off and multiply into several people with the same problem.
  4. PrioritizeLittle things add up. Returning a phone call, checking your email, updating a report –all of these things take time. Make a list and set your priorities for the day (or week). Factor in distraction time. Set aside two or three hours for something that takes huge precedent, and then also factor in thirty minutes following that to do the little miscellaneous things that tend to creep in and suck the hours out of your day. That way, you are actually staying on schedule instead of cramming these things in and losing valuable time.
  5. Keep Yourself Happy: You don’t want to burn out. You’re more likely to stay productive if you’re not burnt out. When you get exhausted with the daily grind, you’re going to start looking for excuses to do anything other than exactly what it is that you should be getting done. Make sure to schedule in time for yourself, don’t overextend yourself day in and day out, and be sure to set up your schedule so that you aren't driving yourself insane.

What are your tips for staying productive? Any specific tips you can share to keep people on point? Feel free to post any comments or questions below!
