Alright, now that you're familiar with Pinterest from our first part of the post here -we can now dive a little deeper into making Pinterest work for your business.  One of the most interesting things I've found so far in personal Pinterest vs. business Pinterest is that it's actually important to be extremely similar in your two approaches.  People want personable profiles -no one likes to feel like they're being sold, poached, etc.  Solution? Put your pins to work.

Tackling HTML, One Evil Character at a Time

Adding to the list of “things I didn’t know about before, but now I do –and so should you” is a little HTML something that goes by the name of “ ”.  It is what’s called a “non-breakable space” in HTML.  As a very wise man explained to me –they appear automatically in text when you double space after a period (like we were all taught to do in typing class).  In your text, they will display as spaces and that is all well and good, except for one thing: they are non-breakable. What does this mean to you, you ask?  It means that the text cannot wrap or be broken up into separate lines.  You may be wondering, “Why do these “ ” even exist?” They exist to irritate me I think.

DOMAIN NAMES! I’m yelling because it’s super important. Picking the right domain name for your site means a lot, and people will notice –or not notice for that matter.  Here are a few tips to (hopefully) steer you in the right direction.  Or, if you’d like, you can completely ignore everything I say and hope for  the best.  The choice is yours.  In the meantime, take a gander at my tips.

For the real people of the world, for the we're not exactly what you'd call millionaires, for the small business owners, for the just starting out-ers: Get Your Money’s Worth!  If you only have $20 to bring to the grocery store, don’t walk in and grab a box of $20 gourmet cookies and walk out.  You don’t have any milk to dip those cookies in, the cookies have nuts and you don’t even like nuts, and for the record –they don’t even taste good.  Your mission was not a success.  On the flip side of that coin, don’t walk in and grab 20 items from the dollar section either.  You don’t need a tiny rubber spatula or mini slinky that will get tangled before you leave the store.  Get what you need.

To DIY or not to DIY...That is one of several questions.

The wonderful world of websites is a lot of things, ‘impossible’ is not one of them.  So, you’re in the market for a website and you’re not sure what route to take?  Well, that’s no cause for panic.  A totally personalized from the ground up, fits like you wish your favorite jeans would fit, brimming with all the bells and whistles kind of site might be what you’re dreaming of, but not necessarily what your dusty wallet can afford.  First off, that’s OK.  Your business is not going to end.  You can unpack the getaway car, there’s no need to run.  You can DIY.  I repeat, you can DIY.

This article has been updated on 3/21/2019 with the article entitled “Keep Your Website Content Fresh to Stay Searchable"

When planning out how you’re going to pull your website together (and even after you already have it all together!) remember something very important, the content on your site is absolutely one of the most important components.  I’m not going to pretend that all of you know what SEO means, because I didn’t know what it meant before either.  SEO is search engine optimization.  Basically, search engines like Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc. are out there scouring the web trying to find some relevant, fresh, and substantial content to fill their searches with.  What does this mean for your business website? UPDATE YOUR CONTENT, do it often, and keep it relevant to what your customers are looking for.

Ok, so not so spooky really.  It’s Halloween which makes me, inevitably, think of one thing: TWO MONTHS OF MAJOR HOLIDAYS START NOW.  What does that mean for your business? Sales! Promotions! Deals!  This is the time of year where everyone decides to splurge a bit while trying to save a buck.  This is the perfect time of year to hammer out details for a great seasonal deal.  If you haven’t even been considering one yet, it’s definitely not too late.  Most sales don’t start till the end of next month anyway.  You’ve still got time!

Think you’re ready to take the jump and design your own website?  What’s next?  Choosing a color palette!  This is a much more important step to designing your website than you may think.  Arguably, one of the most important aspects of any design is its colors.  Sure, you want to gain some attention with your color choices but, you also want to make sure that it’s positive attention.
